Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman, who collapsed twice due to exhaustion during the party’s national rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday, July 19, was rushed to Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhaka for treatment.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, accompanied by a delegation, visited the ailing leader on Saturday evening to express concern and solidarity, acting on instructions from BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
The delegation, including BNP Standing Committee members Dr Moin Khan, Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, and party media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan, spent time at Dr Shafiqur’s bedside.
Mirza Fakhrul conveyed Tarique Rahman’s personal concern, noting that the BNP leader had called him to inquire about the Jamaat amir’s condition.
In response, Shafiqur sent his greetings to Tarique Rahman through Fakhrul, expressing gratitude for the gesture.
Speaking to journalists outside the hospital at around 7:45pm, Mirza Fakhrul emphasised the visit’s significance: “We came as a matter of political etiquette. Amir Saheb is feeling better now, which reassures us. His recovery is crucial at this pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s politics.”
Hospital sources confirmed that Dr Shafiqur, who suffered from heat exhaustion during the rally, is stable and under observation, with doctors advising rest.
