The High Court on Sunday dismissed a contempt of court petition filed against Sarjis Alam, the northern region chief organiser of jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), over a Facebook post commenting on a court order.
A bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Sayed Jahed Mansur passed the order following a hearing on the matter.
The petition was filed by Supreme Court lawyer Md Jashim Uddin, who had earlier served a legal notice to Sarjis on May 24, accusing him of posting a "disrespectful" and "demeaning" remark on Facebook regarding a Supreme Court ruling.
The notice had asked Sarjis to issue a written apology to the justice concerned and submit it to the Supreme Court Registrar General. After receiving no response, Advocate Jashim proceeded to file the contempt petition.
Deputy Attorney General Shafiqur Rahman and Assistant Attorney General Ikramul Kabir represented the state in the hearing.
Jashim Uddin said that the full details of the court’s reasoning will be clear once the written verdict is released. He also indicated that he may consider filing an appeal after reviewing the complete order.
The controversy stemmed from a Facebook post Sarjis made following a High Court verdict on May 22, which dismissed a writ petition seeking to block BNP leader Ishraque Hossain from taking oath as Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
In his post, Sarjis wrote: "If a mob can be created to get a verdict from the High Court, then what is the need for this High Court?"
This post led to allegations of contempt, which the court has now formally disposed of.
