Corporate Desk: Daraz Bangladesh has stepped up efforts to promote women’s health and workplace wellbeing through its employee-led initiative, dWomen, marking International Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a special programme titled ‘Pink Day’.
The initiative brought employees from across the organisation together, with both women and men wearing pink to express solidarity with breast cancer patients and survivors and raise awareness about the importance of early detection and timely medical consultation.
Beyond a symbolic show of support, the programme reflects a growing emphasis on employee wellbeing, inclusive workplace policies and women’s empowerment in Bangladesh’s corporate sector.
Launched in mid-2024, dWomen aims to build a more inclusive and supportive working environment for women at Daraz Bangladesh. Its activities focus on professional development, leadership opportunities, personal wellbeing and workplace safety, while encouraging women employees to connect, share experiences and support one another.
As part of its broader commitment to women’s empowerment, Daraz has introduced initiatives involving employee recognition, mentorship, career development, improved workplace facilities, flexible working arrangements and women-focused engagement programmes.
The latest Pink Day campaign extended these efforts to an important public health issue, highlighting the need to make breast health a regular part of workplace conversations rather than a subject surrounded by stigma or discomfort.
Sumia Rahman, director of general operations at Daraz Bangladesh, said the dWomen initiative was established on the principle that supporting women should be an integral part of everyday workplace culture.
“Through Pink Day, we wanted to create space for an important conversation around breast health and early detection,” she said, adding that access to reliable information and a comfortable environment for discussing health concerns could help women take timely action and share knowledge with others.
As a follow-up to the campaign, dWomen will organise a dedicated breast cancer awareness session on October 19 for female employees of Daraz Bangladesh. A medical professional will discuss warning signs, preventive awareness, the importance of seeking medical advice without delay and practical guidance on breast self-examination.
The session will also provide participants with an opportunity to ask questions directly and obtain information that they can share with their families and communities.
Breast cancer awareness initiatives are particularly important because early identification and appropriate medical care can improve treatment outcomes. Health professionals generally encourage people to be aware of changes in their breasts and seek medical advice about unusual symptoms. Breast self-examination can help with awareness of changes, but it does not replace recommended screening or professional medical evaluation.
From a business perspective, initiatives such as dWomen also highlight how companies can incorporate employee health, inclusion and professional development into workplace culture. Supportive policies and access to health information can contribute to a more informed, confident and engaged workforce.
For women entering or advancing in the labour market, a workplace that recognises both professional ambitions and personal wellbeing can be an important part of building a sustainable career.
Through Pink Day and other dWomen activities, Daraz Bangladesh aims to strengthen a corporate environment in which women receive support not only in their careers but also in their overall wellbeing.
The initiative also sends a broader message that promoting women’s health is not solely the responsibility of women. Participation by colleagues across the organisation can help normalise discussions about breast cancer, encourage timely medical consultation and extend awareness beyond the workplace to households and communities.
