Role of MPs aides vital in strengthening democracy at grassroots: Chief Whip

(BSS) - Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Md. Nurul Islam has said that the personal assistants of Members of Parliament (MPs) play a vital role in strengthening the foundations of democracy at the grassroots level, describing them as key contributors to making the parliamentary system more vibrant and effective.

He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an orientation programme for personal assistants of Members of Parliament at the 3D Hall of the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) in the capital today.

Highlighting democratic values and parliamentary effectiveness, the Chief Whip said the presence of participants at the orientation reflects their willingness to learn rules and regulations and their commitment to democracy, said a press release.

“Your presence this morning at the orientation programme proves that you want to learn laws and procedures. You believe in democracy, and democracy is being institutionalised through your efforts,” he said.

He added, “The continuation of democratic practices and making parliament vibrant and effective is what you all desire.”

The Chief Whip also underlined the importance of personal assistants in the performance of MPs, noting that they often play a trusted advisory role.

“A Member of Parliament places great trust in his personal assistant, and often follows his advice. Your responsibility is significant in guiding MPs on the right path. You will be accountable for your actions in the hereafter,” he said.

He further remarked, “If you support good deeds, you will share in the reward, and if you support wrongdoing, you will share in the responsibility.”

Referring to the national budget, Nurul Islam said it is not merely a set of figures but a reflection of people’s hopes and aspirations.

He emphasized that every citizen, from the poorest to the richest, contributes to the state through taxes, and stressed the need for fair distribution of public resources for development.

“You should study budget analysis and understand all relevant information so that you can help explain it to MPs accordingly,” he added.

With Secretary of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat Barrister Md. Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan in the chair, National Adviser of the European Union Dr. Khondaker Golam Moazzem delivered the address of welcome.

Officials of the Parliament Secretariat and members of the media were also present.
