Expanded 2026 world cup takes shape as more teams qualify

Online Report : The 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, will feature a record-breaking 48 teams for the first time in tournament’s history.

On Thursday, Uruguay, Colombia and Paraguay became the latest teams to secure their spots from South American qualifying.

Uruguay beat Peru 3-0, Colombia defeated Bolivia 3-0, while Paraguay earned a crucial 0-0 draw against Ecuador to seal qualification.


Qualification Format

A total of 43 teams will earn their place through continental qualifiers, while two more will emerge from intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 2026.

The three host nations; USA, Mexico and Canada, have automatically qualified.

Here`s the breakdown of available spots by region:

Asia: 8 direct berths + 1 playoff spot

Africa: 9 direct berths + 1 playoff spot

North, Central America & Caribbean (CONCACAF): 3 direct berths + 3 hosts + 2 playoff spots

South America (CONMEBOL): 6 direct berths + 1 playoff spot

Oceania: 1 direct berth (first time ever) + 1 playoff spot

Europe (UEFA): 16 direct berths
