Online Report : Vice president candidate Umama Fatema has rejected the results of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, alleging massive vote rigging.
In a Facebook post at around 3:30 AM Wednesday, Umama, a leader of the anti-discrimination student movement, declared her boycott of the polls. “Boycott! Boycott! I reject this DUCSU election. A completely shamelessly rigged election,” she wrote.
She further stated, “After August 5th, the Dhaka University administration has handed the nation another disgrace. An administration run by Shibir.”
Umama contested the polls from “Independent Students’ Unity” panel, which also fielded Al Sadi Bhuiyan for general secretary (GS) and Zahid Ahmed for assistant general secretary (AGS).
Earlier, BNP-backed VP candidate Abidul Islam Khan also rejected the results, calling them fraudulent.
By 3:30 am, results from most halls showed Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed candidates in the lead. Even before the full results were announced, Shibir activists staged victory processions on campus.
Meanwhile, BNP-backed student leaders protested at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), alleging pre-marked ballots in favor of Shibir-supported candidates. Later at night, they demonstrated again near Dhaka University Club, accusing officials of stuffing empty ballot boxes during the count.
