Shibir-backed panel sweeps DUCSU polls

The Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed Unified Students’ Alliance panel has won a majority of 28 posts, including Vice President (VP), General Secretary (GS), and Assistant General Secretary (AGS), in a landslide victory at the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections.

Sadik Kayem was elected VP, SM Farhad secured the GS position, and Mohiuddin Khan won the AGS post. The final results were announced on Wednesday (September 10) at the Senate building of Dhaka University by Chief Returning Officer Professor Mohammad Jasim Uddin.

Sadik Kayem won the VP seat with 14,042 votes, Farhad secured the GS post with 10,794 votes, and Mohiuddin Khan was elected AGS with 11,772 votes. Out of the 28 DUCSU positions, 13 are member posts.

Among the 12 secretarial posts, Shibir-backed candidates won nine, while the remaining three were secured by independent candidates. Victorious Shibir-backed candidates include Fatema Tasnim Zuma (Liberation & Democratic Movement Secretary), Iqbal Haider (Science & Technology Secretary), Umme Salma (Common Room, Reading Room & Cafeteria Secretary), Jasim Uddin Khan (International Secretary), Arman Hossain (Sports Secretary), Asif Abdullah (Student Transport Secretary), Majharul Islam (Career Development Secretary), MM Al Minhaj (Health & Environment Secretary), and Md Zakaria (Human Rights & Law Secretary).

Independent winners include Musaddiq Ali Ibn Mohammad (Literature & Cultural Secretary), Sanjida Ahmed Tanni (Research & Publications Secretary), and Zubair Bin Neshari (Social Services Secretary).

Voting was held on September 9 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. A total of 471 candidates contested 28 DUCSU posts, while 1,035 candidates competed for 234 hall union posts across 18 residential halls. This year, 39,874 students were eligible to vote, including 18,959 from five female halls and 20,915 from 13 male halls.
