People from all walks of life paid their last tributes to legendary Lalon singer Farida Parveen, who passed away on Saturday night, at Dhaka’s Central Shaheed Minar on Sunday (Sept 14).

Despite heavy rain, people queued to honour the artist, whose body was placed at the memorial after a short delay due to the downpour.

Lyricist and Executive Director of the Nazrul Institute, Latiful Islam Shibli, described her contribution as “irreplaceable,” saying, “Farida Parveen was more than just a singer. Her interpretation of Lalon’s songs was unmatched. With her passing, our music industry has suffered an immense loss.”

Filmmaker Kamar Ahmad Simon said her death symbolised the end of an era. “When someone like her leaves, it is not just a person we lose — it is an entire time that disappears. There will never be another Farida Parveen,” he remarked.

Singer Beauty also paid tribute, praying for her soul and acknowledging the “deep void” her departure leaves in the world of Lalon music.

Following the public tribute, a funeral prayer was held after Zuhr at the Dhaka University Central Mosque. Her body is being taken to Kushtia, where a second funeral will be held before burial at the Kushtia Municipal Graveyard.

Farida Parveen had been suffering from kidney complications, diabetes, and other health issues for some time, undergoing dialysis twice a week.

She was admitted to a Dhaka hospital on September 2 in critical condition and placed on life support, where she died late Saturday night.
