Bangladesh suffer defeat to South Africa in group match
  Date : 28-06-2026

Bangladesh suffered a narrow defeat against South Africa in a tense Women’s T20 World Cup group-stage match at Lord’s on Sunday, despite putting up a spirited fight with both bat and ball.

Chasing 118 for victory, South Africa reached the target in 19.2 overs, finishing on 118 for 6, after Bangladesh set a modest total of 117 for 5 in their 20 overs.

The match went down to the final over, with South Africa needing five runs. Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Jyoty handed the responsibility to Marufa Akter, but the plan did not pay off as she conceded a boundary off the first delivery. Charline Tryon then took a single off the next ball to complete the chase.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s innings got off to a disappointing start as opener Juwarira Ferdous was bowled on the very first delivery. Fellow opener Tajnehar managed only one run, leaving Bangladesh under early pressure.

Subhana Mostary and Sharmin Akter then steadied the innings with a measured partnership, but both struggled to accelerate. Sharmin scored 22 off 29 balls, while Mostary made 42 off 48 deliveries.

In the closing stages, captain Nigar Sultana Jyoty provided a late boost with a quickfire 32 off 20 balls, helping Bangladesh reach a fighting total.

For South Africa, Anneke Drakeson top-scored with a composed 45 off 45 balls, while Tazmin Brits made 20 off 24 deliveries. Nadine de Klerk contributed an unbeaten 15 off 14 balls, and Tryon finished the match with 8 not out.

Bangladesh’s bowlers showed discipline, with Nahida Akter taking 2 for 24. Marufa Akter, Ritu Moni and Sanjida Akter Meghla picked up one wicket each, but it was not enough to defend the total.

Despite the defeat, Bangladesh impressed with their competitive performance against a stronger South African side, taking the match to the final over.
