Success in vegetable cultivation in Chalanbeel, smiles on the faces of farmers

Mirza Abdur Rob Bulbul, Staff Reporter: Chalanbeel is formed by three things: river, canal and beel. The historical Chalanbeel of Bangladesh is well-known to the people of the whole country as a storehouse of grain and fish. Most of the educated and semi-educated unemployed youth of this area are working tirelessly and are engaged in various professions in different sectors of Bangladesh and are trying to eliminate unemployment by joining the service of the country. 80% of the people of Chalanbeel area are farmers and agriculture is their main source of livelihood. Besides, agriculture is the main driving force of the overall development of the country. In the continuation of that, one of the new professions in the current context of Bangladesh is to achieve success by cultivating vegetables. Along with agricultural cultivation, many unemployed boys are becoming self-reliant by cultivating vegetables as a companion crop. During the on-site information search, Md. Mozir Ali (35) and Rasel Ahmed (30), residents of Kohit village in Tarash upazila, said that in addition to their studies, they have been cultivating vegetables on the banks of Russell Ahmed`s own pond in Kohit village with their uncle and have earned lakhs of taka every year, excluding the cost of their cultivation. He said that the Chalanbeel area, which has the largest number of ponds in Bangladesh, has 35,000 (thirty-five) thousand ponds. According to him, if the farmers and unemployed youth of this region start cultivating vegetables on the banks of various ponds in the entire Chalanbeel area including Tarash upazila, then the unemployment problem of the country will be greatly eliminated. Besides, many people believe that if this profession is sold as a profitable profession, it is possible to free the country and the nation from the curse of unemployment. He has cultivated various types of vegetables in his vegetable garden including brinjal, sweet pumpkin, beans, bitter gourd, gourd, radish, cucumber, red leaf, spinach and green chili. In the markets of Tarash and its surrounding areas, green chili is currently being sold at the price of 80/- to 90/- taka, bitter gourd is being sold at the price of 60/- to 80/- taka, brinjal is being sold at the price of 30/- to 40/- taka, every day, Mojir Ali is earning an average of about 7,000/- to 8,000/- taka by selling green chili, bitter gourd and brinjal from his garden. Since farmers are not financially profitable in conventional crop cultivation, some farmers in this region have taken up profitable vegetable cultivation as an alternative crop to conventional crops. Compared to other crops like rice, mustard, corn, etc., vegetable farming requires less capital investment and a little more work, but the profit is also higher. Vegetables can be sold from the vegetable garden, and there is no hassle in selling. Multiple vegetables can be cultivated at the same time, due to which new vegetable gardens are increasing day by day. In addition, vegetables have a lot of nutritional properties, which are essential in every aspect to meet the needs of the human body. He sincerely believes that if this profession is given importance and government scheduled banks, private banks and NGOs provide loans on easy terms, then more new farmers will join this profession and make a special contribution to the employment of the unemployed, thereby freeing the country and the nation from the curse of unemployment, he expressed his strong conviction and optimism. When contacted in this regard, Tarash Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Abdullah Al Mamun assured this reporter with great sincerity that if farmers come to him for any kind of technical help and advice, they will always extend a helping hand.
