89th birth anniversary of poet Al Mahmud observed with reverence

Online Report : The 89th birth anniversary of Al Mahmud, one of the most influential voices in modern Bangla poetry, was observed on Friday with heartfelt tributes across Bangladesh’s literary community.

Born on July 11, 1936, in Brahmanbaria, Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud rose to prominence by reshaping Bangla poetry in the post-Tagore era. His celebrated poetry collection Sonali Kabin (Golden Dowry) remains a landmark work, blending themes of rural life, love, nationalism, and spirituality with lyrical elegance and a distinctly local voice.

Marking the occasion, Bangla Academy paid homage to the late poet through a commemorative social media post early Friday. The Academy highlighted Al Mahmud’s lasting contributions to Bangla literature and recalled awarding him the prestigious Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1968.

The post also included archival photographs of the poet—two from the Academy’s own collection and a solo portrait contributed by Photoseum, a photography project by renowned photographer and Bangla Academy Fellow Nasir Ali Mamun. The Academy also remembered how, following his death on February 15, 2019, Al Mahmud’s body was brought to the Nazrul Mancha on its premises to allow admirers to pay their last respects.

In a personal and emotional note, Nasir Ali Mamun commented on the Academy’s post, saying, “Even during his lifetime, Al Mahmud was forcibly erased. This story is long." He recalled their shared imprisonment at Dhaka Central Jail in 1974 and referenced the harsh treatment by the Rakkhi Bahini, a topic documented in Ahmed Musa’s Itihasher Kathgoray Awami League and Al Mahmud’s own writings.

“Individuals and institutions deliberately tried to erase the poet from poetry; what remains is the heavy sorrow and the history of a culture of neglect,” Mamun wrote. “Let us celebrate the sorrowful poet Al Mahmud. Thank you, Bangla Academy.”

Al Mahmud’s literary career spanned poetry, fiction, essays, and memoirs, often reflecting the cultural and political turbulence of Bangladesh—from the Language Movement to the post-independence period. Despite censorship and marginalization, his work resonated widely, sometimes outside the mainstream literary establishment.

His major works include poetry collections Lok Lokantor, Kaler Kalosh, Mayabi Porda Dule Otho, Arobbo Rojonir Rajhash, and Bokul Chokh; novels such as Kobi O Kolahol, Purusher Jobanbondi, and Upomohadesh; short story collections Pankourir Rokto and Duhshomoy; and his memoir Jiboner Jolchhobi.

Today, Al Mahmud is remembered not only for his lyrical mastery but also as a symbol of cultural resistance and literary resilience. His legacy continues to inspire writers, readers, and poets across generations.
