US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor`s visit to Bangladesh

US President Donald Trump`s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, is scheduled to visit Dhaka on a 3-day trip starting July 30, 2026, today.

Purpose of the visit
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman described the visit as "exploratory". The main goal is for the envoy to get a broader understanding of Bangladesh`s foreign policy priorities and direction.

Bangladesh has expressed optimism that the visit will help strengthen Bangladesh-US relations and open new areas of cooperation. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said they hope issues like trade, economic diplomacy, and people-to-people contacts will come up for discussion.

Key meetings planned
According to diplomatic sources:
- Day 1: Meetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman
- He will also exchange views with political party leaders, professionals, and representatives of civil society
- Final day: Scheduled visit to the Rohingya camps in Cox`s Bazar to see the refugee situation firsthand. The US remains the largest international contributor to the Rohingya humanitarian.

Context
The visit comes amid heightened diplomatic engagement with major powers, following PM Tarique Rahman`s recent visit to China.

Bangladesh and the US recently discussed trade, investment, economic reforms, regional stability, electoral processes, and risks of disinformation in a meeting between Chief Adviser`s Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi and Gor at the White House. Lutfey Siddiqi also extended an invitation to Gor to visit Dhaka.

On Bangladesh-US relations, Foreign Minister Khalilur said: "We do not feel any kind of pressure" regarding the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART). He also stressed that "Bangladesh`s efforts to strengthen relations with one country should not be interpreted as a deterioration in ties with another".

About Sergio Gor
Sergio Gor currently serves as US Ambassador to India. He was appointed by President Trump as both Ambassador to India and Special Envoy to South and Central Asia. He previously met Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the UNGA in New York. 666faa9ff3bf

Bangladeshi officials say the visit provides an opportunity to exchange views on regional developments, strategic priorities and the future direction of bilateral relations.
