Rabindra Sangeet singer Bannya receives Padma Shri Award

Entertainment Desk : Eminent Rabindra sangeet singer Rezwana Choudhury Bannya has received the prestigious Padma Shri Award from the Indian government.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Monday conferred Padma Shri on the veteran singer in the field of Arts at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

The country’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, were present at the event, alongside other dignitaries.

The Padma Awards, esteemed as one of the highest civilian honors in India, are bestowed in three distinct categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. These awards recognise individuals’ exceptional contributions across a diverse spectrum of disciplines and fields, including art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, and civil service.

Bannya has won many awards including Bangladesh’s highest civilian award, the Independence Day Award in 2016.

She is currently Professor and founding chairman of the Department of Dance at the University of Dhaka. She founded Shurer Dhara, a prestigious music school, in Dhaka in 1992.
