  Date : 26-06-2025

A Dhaka court has granted two-day remand for former Law Minister Anisul Huq, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s former adviser Salman F Rahman in connection with the murder of Sajedur Rahman Omar during an anti-discrimination protest in Jatrabari.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam issued the remand order on Monday after a hearing on the remand petitions filed by PBI Sub-Inspector Amirul Islam Mir.

In a separate case, former Dhaka-5 MP Kazi Monirul Islam Monu has been placed on one-day remand in a murder case over the killing of Riton Uddin in Jatrabari. However, his remand plea in another murder case involving the death of Rasel was rejected.

Additionally, the court granted a three-day remand for retired Rear Admiral Sohail, former chairman of Chattogram Port, in a case over the attempted murder of Gono Odhikar Parishad activist Badrul Islam Saymon during the BNP’s mass rally in Paltan on October 28, 2023.

The murder case over Sajedur Rahman Omar`s death states that Omar joined an anti-discrimination rally at Jatrabari’s Kajla footbridge on July 21 last year, where he sustained bullet injuries allegedly from gunfire by the accused. He died on August 24 while undergoing treatment. On January 3 this year, a case was filed against 81 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina.

In the attempted murder case of Saymon, it is alleged that ruling party affiliates launched an unprovoked attack during the BNP-led opposition’s grand rally, leaving Saymon critically injured. The case names 245 accused, including Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, former MP AKM Sarwar Jahan Badsha has been shown arrested in a Mohammadpur murder case, and former State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Tajul Islam has been shown arrested in connection with the killing of Ramzan Mia Jibon in Paltan.
