Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjat Ali has said that action will be taken against police members who fail to prevent incidents of mob justice in the capital.
He made the remark on Tuesday (June 24) while speaking to reporters after a prize distribution ceremony of the "Road Safety Poster and Slogan Competition," organized under the DMP’s DRSP project with technical assistance from Japanese agency JICA.
The DMP Commissioner said that in the recent mob justice incident involving former CEC Nurul Huda in Uttara, one person has been arrested. “We are also receiving a case. We do not allow mob justice. We have registered many cases related to mob justice. In some incidents, cases of robbery and extortion have also been filed. In a few instances, police officers were suspended and punished for negligence in their duties,” he added.
He noted that the number of mob justice incidents has significantly decreased over the past three to four months.
The commissioner further stated, “We do not allow any raids on houses at night, breaking doors, or similar actions. As a result, such incidents have reduced recently. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands to catch criminals. People should inform the police, and we will respond and apprehend suspects. We will take action against any officers who fail to act in such cases.”
Responding to a question about extortion, the DMP Commissioner said, “Whenever we receive complaints of extortion, we take action. Recently, we filed a case and arrested suspects in an extortion incident at Adabar Police Station.”
At the event, the DMP Commissioner awarded prizes to 10 students in the “Road Safety Poster and Slogan Competition.”
Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Sarwar and JICA officials were also present.
