Online Report : Election Commission (EC) has proposed to regain its authority to suspend or cancel the entire election results of a parliamentary constituency over irregularities in voting.
Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah told reporters after the eighth meeting of the commission at Nirbachan Bhaban in city`s Agargaon.
Replying to a query, Sanaullah said, "We have the authority to cancel the election results of one or more polling centers in case of irregularities. What we lack is the authority to stop the entire constituency`s election, which (that power) was taken away earlier. We`ve now proposed to get it back . . . We hope that we will get it back."
The commission meeting was held at 11.00 AM with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin in the chair. Four election commissioners, EC secretary and other concerned officials were present at the meeting.
Sanaullah said although the RPO amendment proposal was on the agenda of Thursday`s meeting, it was only presented, but the detailed discussion did not proceed. It will be discussed in detail in the next meeting, he added.
"The draft of the supplementary voter list will be published soon ahead of the parliamentary elections and all preparations have been completed. Hopefully, the supplementary draft list will be published next week," he added.
The EC will also publish a draft demarcation of constituencies next week.
