PM appeals for nat`l unity, addresses Christian community on Easter Sunday
  Date : 05-04-2026

Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahmanon Sunday issued a plea for collective national effort, urging citizens of all faiths to unite in building a "Better Bangladesh" that is both prosperous and harmonious.

He made the call during an Easter Sunday greetings exchange event with leaders of the Protestant Church at his Cabinet Division office within the Bangladesh Secretariat.

Addressing a 13-member delegation led by Bishop Philip P Adhikari, President of the Federation of Protestant Churches in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Tarique emphasized a core tenet of his administration, "Religion belongs to individuals, but the country belongs to all. It is the responsibility of people of all religions to take the country forward."

He extended wishes for success and prosperity to the Christian community during their festive occasion.

The Prime Minister reflected on the state of the nation upon his party, the BNP, assuming office. He described the country as being in a "fragile state," with economic and communication sectors significantly weakened, likening the situation to taking charge of a "war-ravaged country."

He also acknowledged the current global challenges, particularly highlighting the impact of the Iran, United States, and Israel conflict on Bangladesh`s energy sector and his government`s efforts to mitigate fuel shortages.

Tarique also addressed past political perceptions, stating that the last election disproved the notion that non-BNP voters, including religious minorities, would not support the party. "People of all religions voted for BNP and ensured victory," he asserted.

Speaking on behalf of the Christian community, Bangladesh Bible Society General Secretary Rev Ashim Baroi and retired Wing Commander Christopher M Adhikari praised various welfare initiatives introduced by the BNP government.

These included the "family card" program, a loan waiver of up to Taka 10,000 for farmers, and honorarium allowances extended to leaders of all major faiths, including imams, muezzins, khadems, priests, sebaits, heads of Buddhist monasteries, and Christian pastors.

The Christian leaders used the opportunity to present two key demands: representation for Christians in the reserved seats for women in Parliament and the declaration of Easter Sunday as a public holiday.

They also conveyed their commitment to collaborate with Prime Minister Tarique’s government, noting that prayers had been offered for former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in 7,000 churches and were now being offered daily for the current administration.

In response, Prime Minister Tarique assured the delegation that their expressed demands would be given due consideration by the government.

The delegation concluded the meeting by inviting the Prime Minister to participate in their upcoming Christmas celebrations and presented him with a commemorative crest.
