Ignoring referendum may make govt ‘illegal’: Asif Mahmud
  Date : 05-04-2026

Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has warned that the government will be considered “illegal” if the outcome of referendum is not respected, escalating political tensions over the issue.

Speaking at a press conference at NCP’s temporary office in Dhaka`s Banglamotor, he said there would be no delay in responding if the referendum results were disregarded.

“We will not take any time, just as you have not delayed in dismantling our achievements,” he stated.

Alleging growing authoritarian tendencies, Asif claimed that signs of authoritarianism are emerging within the current administration.

He drew parallels with past political conditions, saying the country had previously experienced fascist rule and warning against a repeat.

He also rejected comparisons between the latest referendum and one held during the rule of Ziaur Rahman, arguing that the two are fundamentally different.

According to him, the earlier referendum was used to establish a political platform through state mechanisms, whereas the recent vote was aimed at structural reforms backed by public support.

Referring to the ongoing debate, he cautioned that the situation could lead to street protests.

“The developments surrounding the referendum are pushing us towards taking to the streets. This will not be beneficial for anyone,” he added.
