Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Friday formally demanded a rerun of the Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3 elections, citing widespread electoral fraud and violence allegedly perpetrated by ruling party activists.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar raised the demand during a protest rally held at the North Gate of the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram following Friday prayers.
Addressing the gathering, the secretary general reiterated the party`s stance that the electoral process in both constituencies was marred by irregularities, including the expulsion of polling agents and the intimidation of voters.
He claimed that the scale of the malpractice had rendered the polls` outcomes incredible and called upon the Election Commission to cancel the results and schedule fresh voting.
The protest follows a series of allegations levelled by the party during the polling on Thursday, where their candidates in both Bogura and Sherpur reported incidents of ballot stuffing and partiality by election officials.
While the candidate in Sherpur-3 had announced a boycott mid-polling, the party leadership is now seeking a total cancellation of the electoral proceedings in both seats to ensure a fair reflection of the people`s mandate.
