Anwar Hossain showcases two books at Spain’s Sant Jordi festival
  Date : 25-04-2026

Special Correspondent: Bangladeshi author Anwar Hossain showcased his two books — Dukkher Feriwala and Historical Spain — at this year’s Sant Jordi Day in Spain, drawing attention from visitors and officials at one of Europe’s most celebrated cultural events.

Organisers placed the books at a central library stall, where readers, cultural figures and guests explored the works and interacted with the author. The display highlighted the growing global presence of Bangladeshi literature.

Spain celebrates Sant Jordi Day on April 23 each year and fills streets, schools and public spaces with books and red roses. People exchange these gifts to express love and appreciation, creating a vibrant atmosphere that blends literature with emotion.

The tradition traces back to the legend of Saint George, who defeated a dragon and rescued a princess. Folklore says a rose grew from the dragon’s blood, and he presented it to the princess, inspiring the custom of giving roses as a symbol of love.

The celebration later merged with global literary observance after UNESCO recognised April 23 as World Book Day. The festival now combines both books and roses as its core elements.

Santa Coloma de Gramenet Mayor Mireia González Sáez received the books from the author and praised his dedication to literature alongside his professional life abroad. Anwar Hossain presented the book to Núria Parlon Gil, Catalonia’s interior minister.

Spanish MP Lídia Guira and central library director Laia Ventura congratulated Anwar Hossain after reviewing the books. The author said their encouragement inspired him to continue writing.

Sant Jordi Day once again brought together tradition, culture and emotion while giving a global platform to emerging voices such as Anwar Hossain.
