On September 23, CGTN conducted an exclusive interview with Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla. In the interview, Musk shared his latest views and experiences regarding the Chinese market, cutting-edge technologies and future China-US cooperation.
“President Xi Jinping Is a Great Leader”
Musk said, “Chinese President Xi Jinping is a great leader. Under his leadership, China has achieved tremendous development and success, which I have witnessed myself.”
Musk said, “If you go to China, you can see with your own eyes how rapidly the country changes every year. You can see new buildings and new infrastructure, and even while walking on the streets, you can feel the significant improvement in the living standards of ordinary Chinese people. These achievements have been made possible under Xi Jinping’s leadership. He is exceptionally capable and has achieved extraordinary success.”
“The Success of the Shanghai Gigafactory Depends on the Chinese Team”
Discussing Tesla’s business in China, Musk praised the Shanghai Gigafactory.
He said China has a strong foundation in manufacturing. The Chinese team has played an important role in the success of Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory. A large number of talented people work on the team. They are hardworking and reliable. Product quality is first-class, while production efficiency is also extremely high.
Elon Musk described the Shanghai facility as a “gem.”
“China’s Large Models Have Extremely Impressive Performance”
Musk also spoke highly of China’s artificial intelligence large language models. He said the overall performance of China’s AI large models is extremely impressive, while productivity in terms of the use of computing power per unit is close to the highest level in the world.
According to Musk, China will make progress in addressing the shortage of computing power faster than most people expect. He predicted that within the next two to three years, China could overcome much of the computing shortage through advances in lithography technology and chip manufacturing.
“100 Billion Humanoid Robots in 20 Years”
In recent years, a series of new advances in China’s humanoid robotics technology have attracted global attention. Musk has also shared photos and videos of Chinese humanoid robots several times on social media.
Musk said this is an industry in which China and the United States could lead the world together.
Painting a picture of the future, he said every person could have their own robot. Such robots could take care of elderly parents, look after children and even serve as personal tutors for children. They could also perform various other tasks.
Musk said that in the future, one person could control hundreds or even thousands of robots and digital agents.
He predicted, “Within 10 years or less, there could be at least 1 billion humanoid robots in the world. In 15 years, that number could reach 10 billion, and in 20 years, it could reach 100 billion.”

On August 11, Musk said on social media, “China is amazing. I strongly recommend that everyone visit China.”
Recalling his experience of traveling by high-speed rail from Beijing to Xi’an, Musk said, “I once traveled from Beijing to Xi’an by high-speed rail. It was an extremely impressive experience. The high-speed railway stations are very grand. The Terracotta Army is one of the wonders of the world. Remember, don’t keep looking at your phone all the time. Look out the window. The scenery along the way is beautiful.”
Asked why he recommends that everyone visit China in person, Musk said, “Because it is impossible to fully express China’s appeal in my words. China is simply amazing.”
