Dhaka seeks faster repatriation of remains of two Bangladeshis

MM Rahmatullah: Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Dr. Abdullah bin Zafer Abiyah, has expressed appreciation for Bangladesh’s solidarity and support for the Kingdom following recent attacks, as the two countries discussed the safety and welfare of Bangladeshi nationals affected by the situation.

The Saudi envoy made the remarks during a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, MP, in Dhaka on Tuesday, according to information provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, Shama Obaed expressed Bangladesh’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia in the face of the recent attacks and conveyed condolences over the loss of lives. She also called for de-escalation of tensions through dialogue and diplomatic efforts, underscoring the importance of peaceful solutions to regional challenges.

Focusing on the welfare of Bangladeshi citizens, the State Minister sought Saudi Arabia’s assistance in expediting the repatriation of the mortal remains of two Bangladeshi nationals. She also appreciated the care and assistance extended to injured Bangladeshis.

Ambassador Abiyah thanked the Bangladesh government for standing by Saudi Arabia during the difficult period, reflecting the friendly relations and mutual support between the two countries.

The discussion highlighted the importance of close coordination between Dhaka and Riyadh on consular matters, particularly the protection of Bangladeshi nationals living and working in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is a major destination for Bangladeshi migrant workers, making cooperation between the two governments essential for addressing issues related to their safety, welfare and consular assistance.

The meeting also underscored Bangladesh’s emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means of reducing tensions and preventing further loss of life.

The request for the prompt repatriation of the two Bangladeshis’ remains was a key humanitarian concern raised during the meeting, alongside appreciation for the assistance provided to injured nationals.

The exchange reflects the importance both countries attach to maintaining close diplomatic engagement and ensuring that the needs of their citizens remain a priority during challenging circumstances.
