Photo Exhibition at UN Headquarters Marks 80th Anniversary of Tokyo Trial
  Date : 28-10-2026

A commemorative photo exhibition themed "Justice and Peace for Humanity" was inaugurated on Monday (October 26) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Marking the 80th anniversary of the Tokyo Trial, the exhibition reminds the international community of the imperative to jointly defend historical truth, safeguard the victorious outcomes of World War II, and uphold the post-war international order.

Delivering opening remarks, China`s Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, stated that the Tokyo Trial consolidated the post-war international architecture, defended international fairness and justice, and accelerated the development of the international rule of law.

He noted that for those who waged war against peace, unleashed atrocities against civilization, and aligned themselves with malevolent forces against justice, the tribunal served as a momentous judicial reckoning carrying epoch-making political and historical significance.

Fu Cong emphasized that Japan ought to have embraced the spirit of the Tokyo Trial, purged itself of militarist doctrines, and steadfastly pursued a peaceful path. Regrettably, however, right-wing factions in Japan have continually questioned the legitimacy of the Tokyo Trial on various pretexts, using revisions to whitewash their history of aggression.

He added that Japan is progressively deviating from the legacy of the Tokyo Trial, moving ever further away from its self-proclaimed identity as a "peace-loving nation."

Fu Cong stressed that China calls on all parties to uphold the spirit of the Tokyo Trial, remain vigilant against resurgent forms of militarism, and jointly safeguard the post-war international order as well as global peace and security.

The opening ceremony was also addressed by Qi Dahai, Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of China`s Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Zhou Feng, Director of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders; the Director-General of the Legal Department of Russia`s Foreign Ministry; and the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Democratic People`s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to the UN.

Permanent Representatives and diplomats from Spain, Nicaragua, and several other nations also attended the event.

Speakers representing China, Russia, and the DPRK reiterated that through rigorous judicial procedures and incontrovertible evidence, the Tokyo Trial delivered a just verdict against crimes of Japanese aggression, embodying the noble ideals of safeguarding peace. They concluded that revisiting the Tokyo Trial 80 years on is vital for drawing lessons from history, remembering the catastrophic suffering of war, and collectively preventing any resurgence of militarism.
