Jamaat seeks review of certain issues: Ali Riaz

Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, has stated that discussions with political parties are ongoing on various issues. While consensus has been reached on many matters, disagreements remain on others. In some cases, the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami has requested a review of certain issues, and several areas remain open for further discussion.

He made these remarks during the opening session of a meeting between Jamaat and the commission, held on Sunday (May 18) at 10:30 AM.

Ali Riaz said, “The task of building national consensus does not lie solely with the commission; it is also the responsibility of political parties, civil society, and other political forces. Those representing parties at the dialogue table often need to consult with their policymakers, as many issues raised during discussions require reconsideration. We are continuing with this process.”

Expressing optimism, he added, “Even after today’s dialogue, there will be issues in the second phase of discussions that cannot be resolved immediately. If that were possible, it would be ideal in every respect.”

He continued, “We want to move towards a national charter. In that regard, if we can conclude the initial phase of discussions within the next couple of days, we will begin the second phase of talks. We believe that differences of opinion exist in many areas and that consensus is yet to be reached. However, we are confident that progress can be made. In this context, I would like to remind everyone that we have been holding discussions with political parties for nearly two months. The talks are taking place with utmost sincerity.”

Ali Riaz emphasized that it is important to remember the sacrifices made to reach this point. “Many lives were lost to bring us to this table. We have arrived here through much bloodshed. We have a responsibility and obligation to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This is something we must all keep in mind.”

He reiterated, “This is not solely the responsibility of the National Consensus Commission. Establishing national consensus is a shared responsibility of political parties, civil society, and all political and social forces.”

He concluded by saying, “Everyone is sincere, everyone desires consensus, and I believe that through everyone’s combined efforts, we will undoubtedly succeed.”

The meeting was moderated by Monir Haidar, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser. Representing the National Consensus Commission were Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz, Commission Members Safar Raj Hossain, Justice Emdadul Haque, Badiul Alam Majumdar, and Iftekharuzzaman.

The Jamaat-e-Islami delegation was led by Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher. Other participants included Acting Secretary General ATM Masum, Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan, Hamidur Rahman Azad, Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer, Central Executive Committee Member Saiful Alam Khan Milon, Secretary of the Central Publicity and Media Division Matiur Rahman Akand, and lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir.
