Evidence against Hasina leaves no doubt in trial: Chief Prosecutor

The evidence against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in connection with crimes committed during the July-August mass uprising is so clear and compelling that there will be no room for doubt during the trial, said Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam on Sunday.

The prosecution has begun presenting its opening statement in the case concerning crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the uprising, in which Sheikh Hasina and two other individuals are on trial. Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam is delivering the statement, starting with the submission of the investigation report and an outline of key issues related to the case.

In his opening remarks, he told the tribunal, “The evidence of Sheikh Hasina’s crimes in suppressing the July uprising is so strong and explicit that there will not be the slightest room for doubt during the trial.”

The statement was delivered before a three-member judicial panel of International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumder. The other members of the panel are Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

On the same day, Attorney General Mohammad Asaduzzaman, members of the prosecution and the investigation agency, as well as journalists, were present in the courtroom. The formal opening statement is being broadcast live on Bangladesh Television and streamed via the tribunal’s official Facebook page.
