Thomas Muller was on the scoresheet once again as the Vancouver Whitecaps cruised to a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, moving level on points at the top of Major League Soccer’s Western Conference.

The 36-year-old former Germany and Bayern Munich star continued his prolific form since arriving in MLS, netting a precise strike from the edge of the box in the 57th minute to double Vancouver’s lead. Muller now has six goals in seven appearances across all competitions for the Whitecaps.

The home side had taken the lead in the 39th minute through a well-crafted goal from Rayan Elloumi. After Muller’s second-half effort, US international Sebastian Berhalter added further gloss to the scoreline with two stunning long-range goals in the 74th and 92nd minutes.

Beau Leroux scored a late consolation for San Jose in the 89th minute, but it did little to dampen Vancouver’s dominant performance.

The win lifts the Whitecaps to 60 points, level with San Diego at the top of the Western Conference standings — but with a game in hand. Vancouver will seal the conference title if they win their final two regular season matches.

Sunday`s result also confirmed playoff spots for sixth-placed Austin FC and seventh-placed Portland Timbers.
