RU cancels ward quota following student protest
  Date : 10-05-2025

Online Report : Rajshahi University (RU) administration has canceled the ward quota on Thursday night in the face of students’ protests.

RU Vice-Chancellor Saleh Hasan Naqib announced this at an emergency press conference around 10PM on Thursday. He said the administration came to this decision in a meeting with student representatives on Thursday (January 2) night.

Earlier, students locked up 200 members of the RU staff inside a building for 12 hours. Following the announcement, the protesters opened up the locked gate ending their protest and letting out staff.

In the face of continuous protests, the RU admissions sub-committee kept 1 per cent of the quota for the children of third- and fourth-class employees from the previous 4 per cent.

However, the students did not accept this.

Regarding this, RU VC Saleh Hassan Naqib said, “As long as I am in position of the Vice Chancellor, this quota will not return. I will not delay this decision by even a moment".

Meanwhile, the university`s Officers` Association has announced that they will go on strike on January 8 if the 5 per cent ward quota is not reinstated.
