Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced that police personnel will no longer be allowed to carry lethal weapons. The decision was revealed following a meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Committee held at the Secretariat on Monday.
"We have taken a firm decision—police officers will not be permitted to possess lethal weapons. Those currently in possession must return the weapons," said the adviser. He clarified that only members of the Armed Police Battalion will be authorised to carry such arms, as their duties differ significantly from those of the regular police force.
The adviser also addressed the issue of restructuring the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), confirming that discussions are underway and a five-member committee has been formed to oversee the reformation process.
On labour issues, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Chowdhury stressed that garment workers’ wages and bonuses must be cleared before Eid. However, he warned that unlawful demands would not be tolerated and that the government is prepared to take strict action if necessary.
To prevent extortion at cattle markets during Eid, the adviser instructed that 100 Ansar members be deployed at each market. Additional measures will also be enforced to ensure smooth travel for holiday passengers and to curb roadside extortion.
