Puja Das Double Powers Bangladesh to Fifth Win
  Date : 26-07-2025

The Bangladesh U-20 Women`s team has secured another dominant victory, defeating Sri Lanka 5-0, thanks to a brace from Puja Das in the SAFF U-20 Women`s Championship.

The hosts claimed the resounding win against Sri Lanka in a match held at the Kings Arena practice ground on Saturday (July 20).

With this victory, Peter Butler`s side has now won five consecutive matches in the tournament, placing them on the brink of securing the championship title.

Bangladesh had previously thrashed Sri Lanka 9-1 in their first encounter. While the margin of victory was slightly smaller in this second meeting, Bangladesh maintained their dominance throughout the match.

Employing a strategy of high defensive lines and continuous attacks, Bangladesh put pressure on their opponents from the start. The opening goal came in the 25th minute when Kanan Rani Bahadur scored with a precise right-footed finish on a rebound after goalkeeper Tarushika initially saved the shot.

Puja Das doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time. After Trishna Rani`s shot rebounded off the post, Das collected the ball and unleashed a powerful shot into the net.

Bangladesh accelerated their pace after the break. In the 73rd minute, Puja scored her second and the team`s third goal with a long-range shot. Trishna Rani found the back of the net in the 85th minute, beating the goalkeeper. Captain Afida Khandaker sealed the victory from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

With this win, Bangladesh has accumulated a perfect 15 points from five matches. The hosts will clinch the championship title with at least a draw against Nepal on Monday.

Analysts believe the Bangladesh team`s performance indicates a bright future for women`s football in the country. The team`s confidence, structure, and tactics have already become a topic of discussion among sports enthusiasts nationwide.
