Rajshahi University authorities have suspended its controversial `ward quota` following continuous student protests.
The decision is posted on the university’s official Facebook page at 12:45AM on Sunday (September 21).
``Due to the prevailing unsatable situation on Rajshahi University campus, all admission procedures involving institutional facilities have been suspended. An emergency Syndicate meeting is scheduled for Sunday to assess the overall situation,`` the statement said.
The announcement came as several thousand students gathered outside the vice-chancellor’s residence, demanding cancellation of the quota notification and holding of the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election on September 25.
Following the suspension, around 1:15AM, many students left the VC’s residence, while others said the quota was suspended but not cancelled. They said the syndicate meeting on Sunday would provide further clarification.
Meanwhile, teachers, officials, and employees of Rajshahi University are observing a full-day strike on Sunday (September 21) protesting assault on a Pro-Vice-Chancellor and several faculty members during a demonstration.
The teachers and officials announced this strike programme on Saturday night.
Protests erupted on campus on Saturday as students demanded the abolition of the ward quota -- a provision allowing admission privileges for children of the university`s teachers and staffers.
