UN duty-bound to hold referendum in Jammu and Kashmir
  Date : 24-10-2025

MT Desk: As the United Nations Day is being observed across the globe today, Kashmiris continue to await the implementation of the United Nations resolutions, calling for a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir. The UN marks the 80th anniversary of its founding; India continues to defy Security Council resolutions on Kashmir.
The report stated that United Nations Day serves as another reminder that the Kashmir dispute remains unresolved despite being on the UN agenda for over seven decades. It emphasized that this occasion should be used to reaffirm unwavering support for the people of Kashmir in their just struggle.
The report said the United Nations resolutions reaffirm Kashmiris’ right for a free and fair referendum and the UN is duty-bound to fulfill its responsibilities regarding Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. The Kashmir dispute is the oldest one on the agenda of the United Nations, it added. It further said the BJP-led Indian government’s 5th August 2019 brutal, undemocratic, illegal and unconstitutional actions violate UN resolutions on occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
The report maintained that global peace and stability in South Asia depend on the resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN resolutions, and urged the international community to stand with the Kashmiri people in their legitimate struggle for UN-guaranteed self-determination.
It added that the true observance of UN Day lies in turning words into action by delivering long-denied justice to the oppressed people of Kashmir where over 450,000 people were killed and thousands injured by Indian forces’ bullets, shells and pellets since 1947.
The report said the unresolved Kashmir dispute continues to cast doubts on the duty of the UN, as it has yet to discharge its responsibility. It urged the peace-loving and democratic nations of the world to support the Kashmiris’ struggle for their UN-sanctioned right to self-determination.
Meanwhile, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference in a statement issued in Srinagar deplored that India continues to violate UN Security Council resolutions on Kashmir. The statement called upon the World Body and the international community to play their role in resolving the long-pending dispute in accordance with the aspirations of the oppressed Kashmiri people, who are facing political injustice and Indian state terrorism.
