Mushfiqur Rahim breaks Gilchrist record in Galle Test
  Date : 26-06-2025

Veteran Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim reached a rare milestone on Tuesday, surpassing Australian great Adam Gilchrist to become the highest run-scorer in international cricket among players who have never bowled.

Mushfiqur achieved the feat during a determined innings on day two of the ongoing Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

With his 112th run, he moved past Gilchrist’s career tally of 15,461 runs, set over 396 matches across formats.

As of the latest update, Bangladesh were 383 for 4, with Mushfiqur still unbeaten and continuing to anchor the innings.

The milestone came in the backdrop of a strong fightback by Bangladesh after a shaky start.

Having elected to bat first, the visitors were reeling at 45 for 3 on the opening morning before a marathon 264-run stand between Mushfiqur and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto turned the tide.

Both batters brought up centuries, with Shanto resuming day two on 136.

However, he departed early in the morning session, caught by Angelo Mathews at mid-off while attempting a drive off Asitha Fernando. Shanto’s 148 came off 279 balls and included 15 boundaries and a six.

The 264-run stand, spanning 480 deliveries, is one of Bangladesh’s most resilient partnerships in Test cricket.

Mushfiqur, meanwhile, remained composed at the crease, playing a steady hand with 105 off 186 balls at stumps on day one.

His innings featured five boundaries and his experience proved vital as he carried on into the second day.

Liton Das later joined Mushfiqur in the middle, and the pair added over 50 runs for the fifth wicket to further stabilise the innings.

As Bangladesh continue to build on their total, Mushfiqur’s latest record adds yet another chapter to his illustrious international career — now surpassing one of the game`s greatest wicketkeeper-batters.
