Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) leader and Member of Parliament Hasnat Abdullah on Monday accused the ruling BNP government of following the path of the former Awami League administration by attempting to use the police and judiciary for partisan purposes.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the local NCP unit at Payra Chattar in Jhenaidah town, Hasnat Abdullah alleged that the government was interfering in the judicial process and trying to control law enforcement agencies politically.

“The current BNP government has started walking on the path of the Awami League. They want to use the police as a partisan force,” he said. “The independence of the judiciary is under threat. Decisions on court verdicts, bail and judicial proceedings in district courts are being controlled from Dhaka like a remote-control system.”

Referring to Jhenaidah as the home district of the law minister, Hasnat claimed that the legal system there had become captive to a section aligned with the government.

“It is unfortunate that even in the law minister’s district, the courts and judicial system are now under the influence of a government-backed group,” he said. “The government is operating both the police and judiciary through partisan agendas.”

The NCP leader also criticized senior police officials, alleging they were acting as political supporters of the ruling party instead of serving the public.

“After the July mass uprising, we hoped the police would become a force for the people. But now we see senior officers openly identifying themselves as supporters of the government. This is shameful,” he added.

Hasnat warned that the government could face public backlash if it continued what he described as politically motivated control over state institutions.

“The Awami League was forced out because of these practices. If this government tries to become another Awami League, we will not accept it. People cannot be suppressed through arrests, repression and intimidation,” he said.

He also expressed concern over growing political divisions among opposition-aligned groups.

“Today we are fighting among ourselves �" BNP, NCP and Jamaat �" while the Awami League is sitting in India and laughing. This was not supposed to happen after the July uprising,” he said.

The press conference came days after an attack on NCP Central Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary in Jhenaidah on May 22, when eggs were allegedly thrown at him during a confrontation.

Following the incident, both the NCP and district Chhatra Dal filed separate cases against each other.

Police later arrested three people, including NCP Central Joint Member Secretary Tarek Reza, in connection with a case filed by Chhatra Dal.

After the press conference, NCP activists brought out a protest march from Payra Chattar that paraded through key roads in the town.

Senior party leaders, including Tareq Reza and Chief Coordinator Rifat Rashid, addressed the gathering.
