Deutsche Welle report raises questions about safety, sexual crimes against women

MT DESK: A series of rape incidents targeting women, particularly female students, in India has once again raised serious questions regarding women’s safety.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the rape incidents have instilled deep fear among women, while demands for stringent security measures to curb such incidents are gaining momentum.

Security has been stepped up in parks and other public spaces across the Indian capital, New Delhi—a city notorious globally as the “rape capital”—following the alleged gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl last week.

A report by the German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle states that three individuals, posing as police officers, held the girl at gunpoint, took her to a secluded area of Astha Kunj Park, and gang-raped her.

Female students say that the incident has heightened fear and anxiety among women and girls regarding their safety.

Deepika Singh, a university student, remarked that such incidents against women are on the rise and these crimes are becoming commonplace.

Anita Kanwar, an 18-year-old student, questioned whether measures such as increased police patrols, better lighting, and CCTV surveillance could effectively prevent the shameful incidents they face.

According to the Deutsche Welle report, hundreds of students—a large number of whom were women—took to the streets of New Delhi to protest the incident and demand a safe environment for women.

Incidents of alleged sexual violence against women have recently surfaced in other Indian states as well, including cases in the Jamui and Begusarai districts of Bihar, according to the Deutsche Welle report.

Tensions and clashes with the police also erupted during protests against an alleged sexual assault at Lovely Professional University in Punjab.

Data from India’s National Crime Records Bureau indicates that, on average, more than 80 cases of rape against women are registered daily; however, women’s rights organizations maintain that many incidents go unreported.

According to the Deutsche Welle report, although laws regarding sexual crimes in India were tightened and special courts established following the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, women’s rights groups argue that the problem persists due to flaws in police investigations, judicial delays, and societal attitudes.

Experts state that police patrols alone are insufficient for women’s safety; better urban planning, adequate lighting, effective surveillance, and prompt, transparent investigations into cases are also essential.
