  AL`s registration suspended

Bangladesh Election Commission has officially suspended the registration of Bangladesh Awami League (AL), in response to a directive issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the decision at around 9.15 PM on Monday at EC headquarters, stating, "Today, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a directive prohibiting all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League, including its affiliated, associate, and like-minded organizations. In alignment with that order, the Election Commission has decided to suspend the party’s registration."

Ahmed further added, "We have issued a gazette notification accordingly, which will be available from the Bangladesh Government Press."

When asked for the specific reasons behind the suspension, the EC official reiterated that the decision was taken in direct response to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ notification.

Earlier in the day, a government order signed by Senior Secretary Nasimul Ghani announced the suspension of all political activities of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies.

The order clarified that the suspension will remain in effect until the conclusion of judicial proceedings at the International Crimes Tribunal against individuals associated with the party.

The development marks a historic and controversial turning point in Bangladeshi politics, as AL— one of the country`s major political forces — faces a complete political and legal freeze.
