No scope to delay National polls beyond June 2026: Rizwana

Online Report : Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Friday reaffirmed that the next national election will be held within the timeline committed by the interim government—either by December this year or no later than June 2026.

“There is no scope to shift even a day beyond this timeline from our side,” Rizwana said, firmly ruling out any possibility of extending the current interim administration’s tenure.

Her comments come amid growing speculation over Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus`s possible resignation and the timing of the next general election.

Speaking to reporters after attending the "24th National Conference and AGM 2024 of the Zoological Society of Bangladesh" at Dhaka University, Rizwana emphasized the interim government`s commitment to a smooth transition.

“We are not in power—we are simply holding a responsibility,” she said. “This can only be successful with everyone’s cooperation. The chief adviser has given a clear timeframe, and we are determined to adhere to it.”

Addressing the broader national context, the adviser said, “We have come a long way through adverse situations. The reform commissions have submitted their reports. Political consensus-building is underway, and all parties are engaging.”

Rizwana also confirmed the operational progress of key institutional reforms. “A new election tribunal has been set up. From tomorrow, judicial proceedings will officially commence,” she said.

Appealing to the public and political stakeholders, she added, “Our only request is that no obstacles arise at this critical juncture. We want to carry out these responsibilities properly, and we seek everyone’s cooperation.”
