Bangladesh wants to work intensively to ensure labour rights: Sakhawat

(BSS) - Labour and Employment Adviser Brig Gen (retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain has said Bangladesh wants to work more intensively taking technical assistance from the International Labour Organization (ILO) for ensuring workers rights, safe working environment and implementation of labour laws.

“The Labour Law-2006 will be amended soon,” he said while addressing the plenary session of the 113rd International Labour Conference held at the ILO Headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland) yesterday, an official release said here today.

Representatives from 187 countries, including Bangladesh, took part in the conference.

The process for amending the Labour Law by withdrawal of the politically harassment related cases against the trade unionists, constitution of tripartite advisory council and updating the existing labour laws with international standards are on progress, the adviser told the session.

The government is going to appoint 122 new Labour Inspectors for strengthening the labour inspection system in Bangladesh soon, he said, adding that a process is underway for signing sections C155, C187 and C190 of the ILO Convention for ensuring professional health safety of the labourers.

“The government of Bangladesh has laid emphasize on reduction of immigration facilities and technical discrimination and balanced trade to tackle the economic crisis and global challenges,” Dr Sakhawat said.

The adviser also expressed his concern over the reduction of development assistance fund and expects more technical assistance from the ILO for the development of the labour sector.

The labour and employment ministry thanked the ILO governing body for recognizing the Palestine as an observer state and urged the international community to come forward for protecting the civilians of the Palestine.

Labour and Employment Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman , representative from Bangladesh Employers Federation and tripartite advisory council and senior officials of the ministry were present at the conference.
