  Ex-mayor Ivy`s bail plea rejected

A Narayanganj court has denied bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy in connection with two murder cases and one attempted murder case.

The order was passed on Monday afternoon (June 2) by Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Abu Shamim Azad, following hearings on all three cases.

The cases involve the murder of garment worker Minarul, rickshaw-puller Tuhin, and an attempted murder of a man named Nadim. The incidents are linked to protests during last year’s anti-discrimination movement.

Inspector A. Kaiyum Khan of the Narayanganj court police stated that the Minarul murder case was filed with Siddhirganj Police Station on September 3, 2024. The Tuhin murder case was registered on September 13, and the attempted murder case involving Nadim on September 11 of the same year. After hearing both prosecution and defense arguments, the judge rejected Ivy’s bail in all three cases.

Ivy’s lawyer, Advocate Awlad Hossain, argued that there is no direct mention of Dr. Ivy in the First Information Reports (FIRs) of any of the three cases. He claimed the charges do not specify her role, yet bail was denied in all instances.

On the other hand, acting public prosecutor Advocate Omar Faruk Noyon stated that Ivy is implicated as an instigator in all three cases. He added that during her two-day remand in one of the murder cases, she provided significant information.

Dr. Ivy was arrested on May 9 from her home in Deobhog, Narayanganj, in connection with the Minarul murder case. She was placed on a two-day remand for questioning and subsequently sent back to jail on May 27.
