Ex-CJ Khairul Haque on 7-day remand

A Dhaka court has granted a seven-day remand for former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque in a case filed with Shahbagh Police Station.

Dhaka`s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sanauallah passed the order on Wednesday (July 30).

Haque was produced before the court, where Shahbagh Police Station Inspector Khalek Miah, the investigating officer, sought a 10-day remand. Additional Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in support of the remand during the hearing. After hearing arguments from both sides, the judge granted a seven-day remand.

The case was filed last year under Sections 219 and 466 of the Penal Code, accusing Haque of delivering an “unlawful verdict” and preparing a “forged judgment” while serving as a judge. The complaint alleges he scrapped the caretaker government system in a “corrupt and biased” manner.

On the morning of July 24, members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Haque from a house in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

Later that day, he was sent to jail by the court of Dhaka`s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sanauallah in connection with the murder of teenager Abdul Kaiyum Ahad, filed with Jatrabari Police Station over the anti-discrimination movement.

Khairul Haque served as the Chief Justice from October 1, 2010, to May 17, 2011. On July 23, 2013, he was appointed Chairman of the Law Commission for a three-year term, which was later extended multiple times.
