No one will be allowed to act arbitrarily again: Sarjis Alam

(BSS) - National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organizer (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam today said the people of Bangladesh will decide how and to what extent the next national election will be acceptable, saying “No one will be allowed to act arbitrarily again”.

“The people of Bangladesh will determine when, how, and to what extent the next election will be acceptable. No one will be allowed to act arbitrarily again,” Sarjis told journalists after the inauguration of the NCP’s temporary office in Bogura.

Sarjis Alam said, “Jamaat gave a massive call for movement over the issue of proportional representation (PR), took to the streets, yet the July Charter contains nothing about PR. The Charter itself has no legal basis or assurance, yet they signed it.”

“This is not just political inconsistency—it is strong hypocrisy from a party that claims to have a strong position. It was never expected of them (Jamaat),” said Sarjis.

He said, “From our position, we want political parties—those whom the people look to with hope—to remain steadfast in their words. Only then will the people of Bangladesh have confidence in all political parties to take part in rebuilding the future of the nation.”

The NCP’s Northern Chief Organizer said, “In the past, whenever the BNP formed a government, it was a coalition government. Jamaat, on the other hand, has never had strong representation in parliament.”

From our perspective, no single party in Bangladesh’s politics is yet strong enough on its own, he said, adding, “We believe that neither the Awami League, nor the BNP or Jamaat can lead Bangladesh single-handedly in the coming days on questions of dominance or reform.”

“In this context, strong representation of the NCP will be essential—both on the streets and in the parliament. We are working organizationally to strengthen our position toward that goal,” said Sarjis.

He added, “If young people do not represent the next parliament, it will not be possible to change the conventional political culture. We will work together with those who embody this aspiration, who are committed to implementing the July Charter, and who will continue to demand justice for the martyrs even five years from now on.”

Highlighting the party’s ongoing organizational activities, Alam said, “We are holding coordination meetings in various districts to analyze the current political situation, take necessary steps, and strengthen our organizational structure.”

To represent the people effectively—whether as the ruling party or a strong opposition in the next parliament—we must build an organizational network from the central level down to each ward, he said.

“We are also conducting such coordination meetings here in Bogura and will provide necessary guidance to the district leadership. We hope to see NCP convening committees in every ward of Bangladesh very soon,” said Sarjis.

Regarding the upcoming elections, he said, “If the July Charter receives legal recognition, if its implementation is assured, if the judicial processes remain visible and continue, and if the Election Commission can function independently to proceed simultaneously by February, then there will be no problem.”

But if anyone believes they can act as they wish—without accountability, without progress on the Charter, justice, or reforms—then their imaginary dreams will remain just that: dreams, not reality, he added.

NCP Central Chief Organizer (Acting) and Organizing Secretary for Rajshahi Division Imran Imon, Central Committee Organizer Dr. Abdullah Al Sani and leaders of the NCP Bogura district unit were also present on the occasion.
