Sylhet Correspondent: An attack has been alleged in Sylhet`s Kanaighat under the leadership of Salman, the convener of the anti-discrimination student movement. The incident took place at around 11 am on Sunday (April 27) at the house of the deceased Abdur Rahman in village of Nij Jhingabari in Jhingabari Union.
According to local sources, the son of the deceased Abdur Rahman, UK-based Jubo League leader Kamrul Islam, criticized the interim government`s advisor Dr. Yunus government and held a protest rally and posted it on Facebook from London. He circulated some pictures of this rally on the social media Facebook on April 23. Miscreants attacked his house based on that status.
According to the expatriate`s family, 7/8 people on 3 motorcycles led by Salman, the convener of the Kanaighat Upazila Student Movement against Discrimination, came to the expatriate`s house and attacked. The expatriate`s cousin was seriously injured in the attack. The attack caused damage of about 10-12 lakh taka and the miscreants looted many valuable items. Moreover, the expatriate threatened Kamrul Islam and asked why he posted a status on Facebook mocking the government? The status should be deleted immediately and he should apologize publicly.
Family sources also learned that several people are threatening to kill Kamrul Islam on Facebook and Messenger for posting statuses against the interim government from the Facebook ID used by him. This incident has sparked a stir in his home upazila.
Despite repeated calls to the Sylhet district convener of the anti-discrimination student movement`s mobile phone, he did not answer.
When I called OC Abdul Awal, the officer-in-charge of Kanaighat Model Police Station, on his mobile phone to inquire about this matter, he refused to talk about it. He said that our officer will investigate the matter.
It is worth noting that after the political change on August 5, 2024, miscreants attacked Kamrul Islam`s house on September 30, 2024, like the rest of the country. The family has been suffering from insecurity since then.
