Deep depression weakens, heavy rainfall to persist across Bangladesh
  Date : 31-05-2025

Online Report : The deep depression that had formed over the Bay of Bengal is gradually weakening after making landfall, according to a Friday morning update from Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The system crossed the West Bengal-Bangladesh coastline late Thursday night and moved inland, settling over Satkhira and its surrounding areas as a land depression. Despite weakening, it continues to trigger widespread rainfall across the country.

Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected Friday in multiple regions including Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.

The BMD classifies heavy rainfall as between 44 and 88 millimetres, while rainfall exceeding 88 millimetres is considered very heavy.

Shahnaz Sultana, a meteorologist at BMD, noted that the depression remains over land and is moving gradually from the north toward the northeast. As a result, various regions across the country, including the capital, are experiencing continued rain. Dhaka has seen a cloudy sky and light rain since early morning and is forecast to receive rain throughout the day.

The rainfall is expected to persist into Saturday, with further heavy to very heavy showers likely in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Dhaka divisions due to the influence of active monsoon winds following the depression.

The weather system first developed as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday. It intensified into a distinct low-pressure system on Wednesday, which then developed into a depression on Thursday, eventually becoming a deep depression. This transformation brought significant rainfall to Dhaka and many other parts of the country.

On Thursday, Maijdee Court in Noakhali recorded the highest rainfall at 168 millimetres. Dhaka experienced 86 millimetres of rainfall, resulting in waterlogging in several areas of the city.

The heavy rainfall has disrupted transport services, with ferry operations suspended in multiple regions due to hazardous conditions.

Coastal districts including Bagerhat, Patuakhali, Bhola, and Chandpur have reported flooding, with thousands of residents affected. Some areas were inundated following tidal surges and reported breaches in protective dams.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as the depression continues to move inland and gradually dissipates.
