Vice Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, Professor Ali Riaz, has announced that the ‘July Charter’ will be finalised by next month.
“The National Consensus Commission is determined to finalise the national charter within July,” he said.
He made the remarks on Tuesday (17 June) at the beginning of the second phase of talks between the commission and political parties, held at the Doel Hall of the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.
Ali Riaz noted, “Not all political parties may agree on every issue. However, everyone must engage in discussions with a spirit of compromise.”
Although the second phase of talks began before Eid, Tuesday marked the formal resumption of the commission’s main round of discussions with various political parties.
The ongoing dialogue involves representatives from 30 political parties, including the BNP and the Nationalist Consensus Party (NCP). Key topics under discussion include Article 70 of the Constitution, women’s representation in parliament, the appointment of standing committee chairs, the introduction of a bicameral legislature, and the process for appointing the Chief Justice.
Ali Riaz also mentioned that discussions will continue for the next three consecutive days. He added that the commission is willing to hold meetings even on weekends, such as Saturdays, if the political parties agree.
