To mark the 10th day of Muharram in the Hijri year 1447 — known as Ashura — various Islamic organizations, including the Islamic Foundation, organized special programmes and prayer gatherings throughout the country.
In Dhaka, Shia Muslims brought out the traditional Tajia procession from Hosenee Dalan in Old Dhaka, a centuries-old heritage event that wound through city streets. Participants expressed their grief by walking barefoot and reciting ‘Nowha’ — elegiac poems recounting the tragedy of Karbala.
Ashura holds immense significance for Muslims worldwide as it marks the martyrdom in 680 AD of Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), who, along with his family members and 72 loyal companions, sacrificed their lives on the plains of Karbala by the Euphrates River in Iraq while standing against tyranny and upholding justice and the true principles of Islam.
In a message on Saturday, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus paid profound tribute to Imam Hossain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala, describing Ashura as a day of immense sorrow, yet one that is deeply significant and glorious for the Muslim Ummah.
The day was observed as a public holiday across Bangladesh. National broadcaster Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and private TV channels aired special programmes, while newspapers and online portals published features underscoring the importance of Ashura.Bangladeshi cuisine recipes
Special prayers and sermons were also held at mosques and religious centers, including at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and events organized by the Islamic Foundation, reflecting on the enduring lessons of sacrifice, truth, and justice embodied by the martyrs of Karbala.
