Death toll rises to 10 in Israeli airstrikes on Yemen’s capital Sanaa
  Date : 26-08-2025

At least 10 people have been killed following a series of Israeli airstrikes on Sanaa, the rebel-held capital of Yemen, health officials confirmed on Monday (August 26).

The attacks come just days after the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels launched a missile toward Israel, which Tel Aviv said was the first cluster bomb attack from the group since 2023.

Sunday’s strikes hit several key sites in Sanaa, including a facility belonging to Yemen’s state-run oil company—under Houthi control—as well as a power plant and a military installation near the presidential palace. Witnesses described seeing a massive fireball and plumes of black smoke rising over the city.

Anees al-Asbahi, spokesperson for the Houthi-run Health Ministry, said that in addition to the 10 fatalities, 102 people were injured, including seven children and three women, with 21 in critical condition.

The strikes were in response to a Houthi missile launched last week toward Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. The missile reportedly disintegrated mid-air and caused no casualties or damage, despite interception attempts.

Since the start of the Gaza war, the Houthis have intensified their attacks on Israel, launching missiles and drones and targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea. They claim these actions are in support of Palestinians.

In retaliation, Israel—along with a U.S.-led coalition—has been carrying out repeated airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, including the capital Sanaa and the strategic port city of Hodeida. In May, Israeli strikes rendered Sanaa airport inoperable.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Trump administration announced a tentative deal with the Houthis aimed at halting airstrikes in exchange for a stop to maritime attacks. However, the rebels stated the agreement did not apply to what they consider Israeli-linked targets.
