Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shafiqul Islam has been appointed as the Additional Commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), filling a key leadership vacancy that had remained open for over four months.
The appointment was made on Wednesday (August 27) through an office order signed by DMP Commissioner Md. Sazzat Ali.
Shafiqul Islam was previously serving as DIG in the Highway Police. His appointment came after the post of DB chief had been lying vacant since April 12, when the former chief, Rezaul Karim Mallick, was transferred and promoted to DIG of the Dhaka Range.
Since then, the DB unit had been operating under the interim leadership of a Joint Commissioner-rank officer.
A native of Sariakandi upazila in Bogra district, Shafiqul Islam holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Rajshahi. He joined the 18th BCS Police Cadre in 1999 and began his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Lakshmipur.
Over the years, he has held several key positions, including Assistant Commissioner (AC) of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police, and has gained extensive experience in law enforcement and criminal investigation.
