Chelsea begin Club World Cup with 2-0 win over LAFC in front of sparse Atlanta crowd
  Date : 26-06-2025

Chelsea started their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC on Monday in Group D, though the game at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium saw over 50,000 empty seats.

Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez scored the goals that gave the Blues a comfortable win against the MLS side, who only qualified for the tournament in May after beating Club America to replace banned Mexican club Club Leon.

New signing Liam Delap made his debut as a substitute and assisted Fernandez’s late goal, helping Chelsea build momentum after their UEFA Conference League triumph and recent Champions League qualification.

Despite early signs of good attendance at the tournament, only 22,000 fans attended the match in the 71,000-capacity stadium. The weekday afternoon kickoff, seemingly scheduled for UK TV audiences, deterred many locals—especially with ticket prices dropping in the days before.

LAFC`s vocal `ultras` brought energy behind Hugo Lloris` goal in the first half, but the French goalkeeper had a busy afternoon. He denied efforts from Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke, while Cole Palmer narrowly missed with a shot from range.

Chelsea opened the scoring through Neto after Jackson split the LAFC defense with a precise pass. The Portuguese winger left Ryan Hollingshead behind with a clever move before smashing in at the near post.

Former Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud came on for LAFC in the second half, but Robert Sanchez kept them out with a key save from Denis Bouanga.

Delap made an instant impact after coming off the bench, showing pace and awareness to set up Fernandez’s goal, which sealed the win. The Argentine midfielder controlled Delap`s low cross in the six-yard box and beat Lloris for Chelsea’s second.

Meanwhile, Group D rivals Esperance Tunis and Flamengo were scheduled to face off later on Monday.
