Mud wall houses on the verge of extinction in Chalanbil

Mirza Abdur Rob Bulbul, Staff Reporter:- Chalanbeel is formed by rivers, canals and beels. In this historical beel region of Bangladesh, mud wall houses, known as the AC of the poor, are almost on the verge of extinction due to the touch of modernity. However, in some villages, as witnesses of time, some mud wall houses are still standing in some regions. These houses are strong, comfortable and are known as the AC of the lower and middle class people of the society. In ancient times, most of the houses in the country`s largest beel region, Tarash, Ullapara, Shahjadpur, Chatmohar, Bhangura, Faridpur, Gurudaspur, Singra and Atrai areas were mud houses. Since the cost of building mud wall houses was low, the poor people relied on these mud houses. This house was safe and comfortable for people to live in. From ancient times to the late 90s, there was no alternative to the mud wall houses that were popular in this region. At that time, everyone built mud wall houses and the common people of the area lived in them. Mud houses do not feel very cold in winter, and they do not feel very hot in summer. Which is called the poor`s AC. This main feature is that they last for ages without renovation. The girls of the village used to paint the walls of these houses with Alpana and keep them attractive. During the field investigation, we spoke to Md. Abdur Rashid of Chowra village, who lives in a mud wall house in Tarash upazila. He said that mud houses built at low cost are incomparable. Basically, mud wall houses stay cool in the extreme heat of summer. Again, the house feels warm inside even in the extreme cold of winter. Md. Abdul Mazid of Morasoguna village said that nothing can be more comfortable than mud wall houses for living in both summer and winter seasons. So, even though I have the means, I cannot give up the mud house. To build a mud wall house, first the mud has to be made 1 to 2 feet high and built like a wall. After 10-15 days, when the soil dries, the wall has to be built again on top of it. When the desired height is reached at some point while building the house, the roof of the house has to be built on top of it. No one is building mud wall houses in the entire Chalanbeel area anymore. Currently, it is difficult to find craftsmen or workers to build these houses. Md. Abdur Rahman, an elder of Kohit village, said that in the modern era and due to the improvement in the economic condition of the people, most of the people of the village are now building tin fences, tin houses, semi-paka buildings and building houses, so the famous AC mud wall houses of Chalanbeel area are on the verge of extinction.
