Analyst Tajusl Islam’s Opinions: Authorities should refrain from burning down valuable fishing nets

Staff Correspondent : According to various sources of news, it is learnt that the administration’s operation in different places of the country are used to seizing fishing nets from the fishermen who are illegally fishing in different water bodies of the country. After seizure of the fishermen’s nets the administrations are burning down their fishing nets to ashes. Numerous fishing nets’ financial value exceeds millions of taka. With the burning these valuable materials are also burned — millions of taka to ashes in the twinkle of an eye. In most cases the fishermen are fined and their fishing nets are burned at the same time. We often see such images in newspapers and electronic media. In this regard, the contemporary analysts and chief adviser to The Muslim Times, Md. Tajul Islam, thinks that the burning down of their hard-earned resources in addition to the fine to the poor fishermen is too heavy for the poor men to bear. He said that the nets that are made by yarn are very valuable yarn and are imported from other countries. These yarn and nets are not usually found in this country. They are very advanced quality. Long time and money are needed to make different types of nets. These nets and yarn are the wealth of the country. So it is not wise to burn all these resources, this expert thinks that it is not wise. By calculating, it is seen that every day, many fishermen are fined due to fishing in rivers, canals, bills and various reservoirs throughout Bangladesh and their nets are burned. Thus thousands of nets are being lighted every day. For example, a few days ago, the fisheries departments and administration in different areas of Barguna raided and seized illegal nets of Tk 4 crore and destroyed them. In a news it is said, in the nationwide ongoing operation, the River Police seized over 2.41 crore meters of illegal fishing nets in the past seven days. They also arrested 248 individuals as part of the move to protect the country`s fisheries resources and ensure safety on the waterways, said a press release of the force. A total of 2,41,00,550 meters of illegal nets, 1864 kg of fish, and 210 kg of jellied shrimp were seized during the operations. In another news it is said that Tk 10 lakh illegal current nets burnt & destroyed in Gosairhat of Shariatpur, to protect indigenous species of fish, banned currents and Chinese door nets worth Tk 10 lakh were burnt and destroyed. The Fisheries Department conducted this campaign to increase the production of local species of fish. The Fisheries Department conducted a raid in Daser Jungle Bazar of Gosairhat Upazila of Shariatpur from Friday morning to noon and seized the nets. Gosairhat Upazila Fisheries Department conducted an operation in Das’s jungle market on the basis of secret information, 3 lakh meters of illegal current nets and 220 pitches of China double nets were seized from 3 warehouses in the market. The estimated market value of the nets is Tk 10 lakh, said the Fisheries Department. The seized nets were taken to the banks of the river near Pathi Bridge in Gosairhat and burnt in front of the locals by the Fisheries Department. The names of the warehouse owners were not known from where the nets were seized. This way, every day huge number of fishing nets are being gutted by the local administration. So this analyst Mr Tajul Islam thinks that if the valuable things are burnt to ashes then it is a great loss for both the poor fishermen and the country as well. Therefore, the authorities concerned ought to refrain from this act of burning and resort to other methods.
