Expectant mother among 5 killed as bus hits ambulance on expressway

Online Desk : A devastating collision at Nimtala on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in Munshiganj claimed the lives of five people, including a pregnant woman and her father, when a speeding bus rammed into a parked ambulance around noon on Thursday.

The tragedy, which left six others injured, has shattered families and underscored the fragility of life on Bangladesh’s roads.

The victims were identified as Afsana Akhter, 20, an expectant mother; her father, Samad Fakir, 50, from Dhupkhali village in Madaripur; ambulance driver Md Mahbub Hossain, 40; Md Billal Hossain, 40; and an unidentified woman whose body remains at the scene.

The injured are receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s emergency department.

Swarna Akhter, a relative, recounted the heartbreaking sequence. “We were rushing Afsana to a hospital in Dhaka for her pregnancy,” she said, her voice heavy with grief.

“The ambulance’s tire burst, forcing us to stop. Some of us stepped out, standing by the road, while others stayed inside. Then, a bus crashed into us at full speed.”

The impact killed five, including Afsana and her father, who had been by her side, dreaming of welcoming a new life.

The loss of Afsana, on the cusp of motherhood, has left her family and community reeling. “She was so full of hope,” Swarna whispered, tears falling.

“Now, we’re left with only pain.” The ambulance driver, Mahbub, known for his dedication, leaves behind a family now grappling with sudden loss.

Inspector Md Faruk of Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s police camp confirmed that four bodies are in the hospital morgue, with the fifth at the scene.

The incident has been reported to the relevant police station for investigation. The six survivors, battling severe injuries, are under urgent care, their families clinging to hope.
